We, Enrico Fermi’s High School students and teachers, from Montesarchio, located in the Province of Benevento have decided to monitor a project financed by the European’s Regional Development funds (ERDF) “ANTI-SEISMIC ADAPTATION OF DON LORENZO’S MILANI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL” since we strongly feel involved in the topic at a personal level. In fact, we live in an area with high seismic and hydrogeological risks. Many of our grandparents had to evacuate due to the November’s 1980 seismic event (Irpinia earthquake) just like many of us did after the landslides that affected the entire Valle Caudina. We also have recently (December 2019) witnessed sudden and catastrophic episodes.
In particular, San Martino Valle Caudina’s city hall (a town not far from our school) has been a victim of many seismic events and landslides. Last year, in a PCTO of "photogrammetry with drone" organized by our institute, we detected that the town’s historic center area was the most vulnerable to such phenomena. We, Enrico Fermi’s students, urged by these recent events and fear of them happening again, have decided to do our part by carrying forward this stimulating project. Specifically, what we want to analyze is to show how the historic center’s layout has changed after the mentioned incidents and what has been done to strengthen the soil’s protection and the natural risks’ prevention. All of this will be done by focusing on the seismic adaptation of the educational institution (former school elementary) Don Lorenzo Milani.
Our first step is to research materials related to the topic by contacting the city hall’s administrators and our partners: Antonella La Faci (Istat Naples referent), Maria Senatore (Unisa Salerno CDE Centre referent), Dott. Arch Pasquale Pisano (San Martino’s mayor) along with technicians involved in the realization of the adjustment. In addition, we have created Instagram, Twitter, youtube and Facebook accounts in order to broaden the project.
“Risk and Rebirth” is the name chosen to represent us because we think that from every disaster and every fall, there is always a rebirth. In our logo, we have resembled the school, place of adaptation, with a fault and seismic waves beneath it. In the middle of the door there’s a flame, symbol of hope and rebirth, which also recalls our high school logo. In its creation, it was fundamental the participation of a disabled student. During the first meeting with the professors: Mauro Cocozza (referent teacher), Giuseppina Lanni (support teacher) and Marcello Cicotti (support teacher), we were assigned different roles and duties:
