Prefect's Villa: a green heart that comes back to life

Our team, known as “The Miracle Workers”, embodies the spirit of making the unbelievable happen. This name was chosen because, due to the frequent interruptions of the renovations, the reopening of the Prefect’s Villa to the public seemed nearly impossible. As a very hard-working team, we are pretty sure to “make the unbelievable happen” by returning a renovated Prefect's Villa to the citizens in all its beauty and uniqueness.

Our team logo features the fountain at the heart of the Prefect’s Villa, symbolising the core of this beautiful oasis. The fountain holds a significant story; originally located in Piazza Mario Pagano in the 1800s, it was then moved to Piazza 18 Agosto before mysteriously disappearing. For a long time, citizens had no idea of where the fountain was until rediscovering it in the strategic location of the Prefect’s Villa, a valuable space centrally located near the historical centre. Prefect’s Villa is currently considered a public garden loved by the citizens as the green heart of Potenza. A restoration project is running in this green oasis at the moment; it started in September 2022 and was scheduled to finish in September 2023. However, due to the temporary suspension of renovation work, the completion date is uncertain. The project, funded regionally with European funds totalling € 1,200,000, allocates €900,000 from the EU (75%), €210,000 from the revolving fund (18%), and €90,000 provided by the region ( 8%). The project plan includes slope restoration, space recovery, accessible pathways for people with disabilities, the creation of a fitness area and safety measures for green areas. Two phases of work are planned, with the first scheduled for completion by 2023 and the second by 2024.

In order to turn our aspirations into reality, we are working with the School of OpenCohesion, a new and thrilling experience with our school this year. Initially facing this uncommon experience, our tutors have been understanding especially due to difficulties and guided us through getting across open cohesion policies. Divided into groups for the Data Expedition, we chose a theme related to Potenza and a project focused on the requalification of the Prefect’s Villa.

The project chosen was about the re-qualification of the Prefect's Villa; it seemed the most interesting and well done to the whole team. The shared PowerPoint helped us understand the project better and persuaded us all. Interesting keywords emphasised such as are: strategic location, enhancement of goods, promoting Potenza, cohesion, and natural theatre.

After the first step, each team member assumed a specific role: storyteller, blogger, analyst, coder, scout, designer, social media manager, and project manager. The next steps guided us in extrapolating public data from regional, municipal and provincial archives and websites. Furthermore, numerous local authorities were identified as potential contributors to the project's functionality.

Our project aims to enhance the conditions and standards for the supply and use of environmental assets.

From our perspective, this project could even encourage community action, raising awareness on the subject, and promoting a renovation plan. The ongoing renovation of Prefect’s Villa, a central hub for young people and outdoor cinema, could also impact tourism service.

This year, we embarked on a new experience of open cohesion with the school. At first, it was an unusual experience, but our tutors have been understanding, especially due to the difficulties that this new experience could bring.

Our tutors began by explaining how open cohesion policies work.

Afterwards, they divided us into groups, assigning a task to each of these (Data Expeditions). Each group had to choose a theme and project related to Potenza.

Among the three projects, the one chosen was about the re-qualification of the Prefect's Villa; it seemed the most interesting and well-executed by the entire team.

The shared PowerPoint helped us to understand the project better with keywords such as strategic location, enhancement of goods, promoting Potenza, cohesion, and natural theatre.

After the first step, we moved on to the next one, in which each of us was assigned a role: storyteller, blogger, analyst, coder, scout, designer, social media manager, and project manager. The next steps outlined the process of extrapolating public data from the archives of sites in the region, province and municipality. Furthermore, numerous local authorities can take part in the project's functionality.

This project aims to enhance the conditions and standards for the supply and use of environmental assets.

In our view, this project could even encourage actions, raise awareness on the subject, and promote a renovation plan. Also, the tourism industry might be affected by the renovation of the Prefect's Villa, which is still in progress and currently closed. The Prefect's Villa, as well as serving as a public garden, is also a significant gathering place for young people where movies were also shown: in fact, it is also known as an “outdoor cinema”.
